The International Relations Office (IRO) provides all the necessary guidance and information before arrival and assistance will be given automatically upon arrival. Exchange students are not required to fill in any special application form for accommodation. We just ask students to fill in the regular application form (where a little information about accommodation is required). However, students who intend to apply to the ISCTE-IUL University Residence Hall must fill in the appropriate application form (more information in the University Residence section).

Provisional Accommodation - Youth Hostels
Because we cannot book private accommodation on behalf of students, it is advisable to make a booking at a city youth hostel for the first few days of your stay, especially while you are looking for accommodation (cost approximately €16/night), unless you are staying at the university hall of residence.
You can book it online or contact the Central booking Service by phone +351 707 203 030, monday to friday, from 9:00am to 6:00pm, by fax +351 217 232 101 or by e-mail- reservas@pousadasjuventude.pt.
There are two youth hostels in Lisbon. Check the links from more information:
Pousada da Juventude de Picoas & Pousada da Juventude do Parque das Nações
To stay at a youth hostel, you need to get an International Youth Hostel Card (cost approximately €6/one year). The Portuguese Youth Card holders can also benefit from this type of accommodation. For more information, visit the Youth Hostel site here.

The ISCTE-IUL University Residence meets some of the accommodation needs of its visiting students and teachers who have so far only been served by the private accommodation market all over Lisbon. Located in the 17th-century Santos-o-Novo Monastery, which is classified as a National Monument, on a small hill by the river Tagus in Lisbon's east end, the residence has a splendid view and is a short distance from the central railway station of Santa Apolónia, the traditional neighbourhood of Alfama, downtown Lisbon, Terreiro do Paço, and the new residential, retail and service area of Parque das Nações.
Since there are more applicants than vacancies, it will not be possible to provide accommodation at the hall residence for all exchange students. The criterion used is the date of arrival of the application form. Rooms: The hall of residence offers double, triple and four person rooms.
All the rooms have a bathroom with shower and a single bed, wardrobe and desk for each guest. Facilities: Laundry, Sitting Room with TV, Games Room, Kitchen and refectory, Internet.
Availability: The hall of residence is open 12 months a year and residents are entitled to accommodation and bed linen and towels throughout this period. At the start of the academic year, students should give the hall 48 hour’ notice of their arrival, by phone or in writing.
First time residents cannot check in on Sundays or national holidays. Students can leave and enter the residence at any hour.
Location and access: The residence is located at Pátio das Comendadeiras, Calçada das Lages, Santos-o-Novo. This area is served by buses that travel around a large city area, and go to important central areas, such as Terreiro do Paço, Marquês de Pombal, Rato, Saldanha, etc.

Private Housing
The IRO selects and organizes a database of available flats for short term lease in the private market, specially intended for international students. Assistance will be given on arrival by the office and the Buddy Mentors.
ISCTE-IUL can only help you after your arrival, as no students should rent a room without seeing it, unless you are strongly advised to.
